Nuclear weapons had been deployed on the Korean Peninsula for 33 years from 1958 until 1991 when the United States withheld the last 100 heads of tactical nuclear weapons, a local daily has reproted.

In January 1958, the United States deployed tactical nuclear weapons, with small nuclear warheads shot from the non-guided rocket, Honest John, and 8-inch howitzer, for the first time. The 8-inch howitzer had been deployed for 33 years till it was withheld in 1991, JoongAng Daily said.

Two months later, nuclear warheads that fighter jets can drop were employed. Three types of ground-to-ground missiles, Lacrosse, Davy Crockett and Sergeant with small nuclear warheads, made their debut in Korea between July 1960 and September 1963.

As many as 950 warheads were deployed as of 1967 as a growing number of tactical nuclear weapons got to be introduced. A total of 11 types of tactical nuclear weapons were deployed over 10 years till 1991. There were even B-61 nuclear warheads which fired from 155mm howitzers and fighter jets.

Actually, there were also trainings for loading and manipulating nuclear warheads in 1991. According to declassified document of the United States, there was training by the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing which possessed 48 F-16C/Ds at the U.S. Air Base in Gunsan during the first half of the year.

The fighter wing held a special training of loading and manipulating nuclear warheads. The special training consisted of nuclear attack session and single-ship strike session. This means that in case of emergency, the fighter jets which carried or were able to carry B-61 warheads were ready for war, while completing a variety of training.




91년까지 한국에 핵무기 최대 950기 있었다


1991년 마지막 남아 있던 미국의 전술핵(tactical nuclear weapon) 100여 기가 철수되기 전까지 1958년부터 33년간 한국엔 핵무기가 배치됐다.

58년 1월, 미국이 처음 배치한 전술핵은 비(非)유도 로켓인 어니스트존(Honest John)과 8인치 곡사포(howitzer) 등을 이용해 소형 핵탄두를 쏘는 방식이었다. 8인치 곡사포는 최초 도입 후 핵무기가 빠져나갈 때까지 33년간 배치됐다.

그해 3월에는 폭격기 투하용 핵탄두가 들어왔고, 뒤이어 소형 핵탄두를 장착할 수 있는 라크로스(Lacrosse), 데이비 크로켓(Davy Crockett), 서전트(Sergeant) 등의 지대지(地對地) 미사일 3종이 60년 7월부터 63년 9월 사이 배치됐다.

이처럼 전술핵 배치가 늘어나면서 67년엔 모두 950기가 배치돼 기록을 세웠다. 91년까지 모두 11종의 전술핵이 배치돼 10년 이상 운영됐다. 91년엔 155㎜ 곡사포와 폭격기 투하용 B-61탄두 등이 있었다.
91년에는 실제 핵탄두 탑재와 조작 훈련이 이뤄지기도 했다. 비밀 해제된 미 정부 문서에 따르면 그해 상반기 군산 주한미군 공군기지에서 48대의 F-16C/D 전투기를 보유하고 있던 제8 전술비행전단의 훈련이 있었다.

이 비행단은 핵무기를 탑재하고 다루는 특별훈련을 실시했다. 특별훈련은 편대 단위의 일반적인 핵 공격 훈련과 단독(single-ship) 타격훈련으로 짜여졌다. 유사시를 대비해 B-61 탄두를 탑재하거나 탑재할 수 있는 전투기가 다양한 훈련을 소화하며 상시 준비 태세를 갖추고 있었다는 의미다.
