여의도 벚꽃축제가 열리고 꽃의 향연이 열리고 있는데도 이를 바라보면서 '마음 한구석이 편치 않다'고 느끼는 분들도 있는 것 같습니다. 벚꽃이 흔히 일본의 국화(國花)로 잘 알려져 있기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 "일본의 국화를 보면서 왜 우리가 좋아해야 하지?", "벚꽃을 보며 즐기는 것은 일제의 잔재다"라고 말하시는 분들이 많습니다.
그러나 여의서로에 꽃이 활짝 핀 왕벚나무의 원산지는 바로 한반도의 제주도입니다. 그럼 지금부터 왕벚나무의 원산지가 왜 제주도인지 자세히 알아볼까요?

In 1933, the Japanese botanist Gen'ichi Koizumi reported that the Prunus × yedoensis originated on Jeju-do island (Quelpaert).[6] In 1916, Ernest Henry Wilson had thought that "Japanese Sakura (Somei Yoshino)" was a crossbreed of the wild species of Japanese Sakura ("Edo higan" and "Oshima sakura").[citation needed] In 1991, Professor of Tsukuba University Iwasaki Fumio reported that "Japanese Sakura (Somei Yoshino) originated around 1720-1735 by the artificial crossing in Edo (Tokyo)."[7] Recent studies conducted on the comparison of Korean and Japanese cherry blossoms concluded that the two trees can be categorized as distinct species.[8] Further studies are ongoing.
